What are the biggest mistakes when pitching podcasts? I get asked this often. Podcasts are now so popular that everyone is taking a chance and pitching shows. Great! There’s plenty of room for everyone and certainly enough new and niche shows. But a lot of mistakes are being made. Podcast hosts and producers consistenly share their experiences with us. So, here’s how NOT to pitch podcasts (if you actually want to get booked).
Biggest mistakes when pitching podcasts
1. Not personalizing pitches
I can’t believe this is still an issue. This is basic 101 of pitching anything to anyone. However, it’s still happening and if yo’ure lucky enough to get your email opened it will go straight to the trash. This will never work. Ever.
2. Not doing your due diligence
I’m still getting pitched for a podcast that hasn’t had an episode in 4 years. That’s basic. Delete. Not only that, your personal brand has now been tainted.
3. Not listening to the podcast
Plenty of podcasts are solo shows or shows that don’t have guests are are chat between a panel or co-hosts. Just finding a show isn’t enough. You need to ensure you understand the basic format.
4. Not being self-aware
If the last few guests were Michelle Obama, Tim Ferriss, Gary Vaynerchuck and Oprah, then you may be at the calibre of guest the show requrires (yet). Doesn’t mean you won’t at some stage. But be wary of punching above your weight. There are other ways to make in-roads to big shows and networks but a cold pitch to a big show is just a way to show you’re not self-aware of your personal brand or a show’s status.
5. Making it All about you
Sending a pitch, saying how much you want to go on the show, and how great you are is the fasttrack to the trash. Nope, it’s not about you. It’s not even about the host. A pitch should be about what the audience gets.
There’s a laundry list of common mistakes when pitching. Those are the top 5 to avoid (stuff to stop doing right now). Change that up and you’re pitches will instantly improve! You don’t know what you don’t know.I get it but guess what, now you know! It’s super easy to make instant changes. Good luck out there. Here’s a few tips to get you started
